International Studies: The COVID Edition
Student experience story by Julia Lo Surdo
It is easy to say that everyone has been affected by COVID-19 in some way, shape or form over the last year. Life at university has certainly adapted to the pandemic, in the hopes that students can continue their studies, and social lives, to a somewhat normal capacity.
The International Studies programs at UTS are arguably some of the most inviting aspects of UTS, especially since the International Studies degree can be combined with a wide variety of faculties and majors.
Being a creative myself, having the opportunity to pursue my major degree, Music and Sound Design, as well as study a language was a bit of a dream come true. Learning a language has helped me gain a deeper understanding and insight to my major and communications subjects. Whilst COVID has definitely thrown a spanner in the mix of things, my experience as an International Studies student throughout the pandemic has shown me the full extent that UTS is willing to go: to adapt and cater to students’ needs.
International Studies was among the most affected majors during COVID as travel overseas came to a halt. Here are some of the initiatives UTS has put in place so that students can gain international experiences from home:
- Think Global/Think Global Events
- Virtual Global Exchange
- Bachelor Language and Culture instead of Bachelor of International Studies
My personal experience as an International Studies student throughout COVID came with a variety of options. I chose to modify my degree to a Bachelor of Language and Culture. This allowed me to continue learning a language and participate in my global adventures from home. Students have the opportunity to still connect with academics and successors from overseas via zoom and other means. This was done both inside and outside the classroom.
Other students I know chose to continue their International Studies degree and defer their year of exchange in the hopes that international travel will be back as soon as possible!
The Diploma of Language is also available to all UTS students. This diploma gives students the opportunity to learn a language and participate in virtual global opportunities such as virtual global exchange and other Think Global events.
All in all, it is easy to say that International Studies at UTS is still thriving despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented. Of course, we are all wishing for boarders to re-open safely and efficiently, though in my experience, UTS has found a variety of ways to adapt to the various changes.
