The Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre (FBI CRC) commissioned UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures and The University of Melbourne to review what is required for Australian battery industries to be equipped for a future where responsible materials supply holds an increasing market share in the global supply chain of batteries. To achieve this, ISF proposed developing a pathway to assist Australian governments and industry to obtain value from the certification of sustainable practices in battery material supply and to assemble life-cycle assessment (LCA) datasets and analyses for Australian battery materials – in short, the data to evidence claims about social and environmental performance of Australian operations.

A scene-setting report found that with sectoral leadership, the battery material supply industry in Australia can be well placed to respond to changing societal and consumer expectations regarding sustainability in the supply chain. The follow-on project with additional research and industry partners, will help Australian industry to effectively incorporate circular economy principles, improve confidence across the sector and in governments in the worth of certification and LCA and enhance the social and environmental performance of battery industries.
