Lake Macquarie City Council was preparing an Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy to support take up of electric vehicles (EVs) within the City as new plug-in electric vehicles enter the Australian passenger vehicle market. The Council required technical, strategic, and business model input to support the development of its strategy.
The project involved the development of a strategy evaluation framework, business model analysis and development, stakeholder engagement, workshops, and the provision of technical guidance.
Lake Macquarie's strategy aims to prepare the community for the global transition to electric vehicles. The strategy focuses on collaboration between Council, residents and the private sector and proposes that each group will eventually own charging facilities. Council has kickstarted this push by installing the area's first publicly accessible charging stations across the city and now has four electric cars in operation.
The Strategy also includes commitments to smart and sustainable energy for EV charging, with acknowledgement of the role that demand management, smart charging, and off and onsite renewable energy will have to play.
Lake Macquarie City Council was awarded the 2020 Climate Council Cities Power Partnership Sustainable Transport Achievement Award for their subsequent EV Charging Strategy.
