Our work engages critically with the role of the private sector in provision of WASH services.
We provide evidence that supports small-scale WASH enterprises to achieve equitable outcomes, realises the potential for economic empowerment and strengthens government engagement.
PROJECT | 2012-2017
Enterprise in WASH
This research investigated the role of small-scale enterprises in sustainable WASH service delivery, with a focus on equitable outcomes for the poor. Conducted in partnership with civil society organisations and local research institutions in Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Studies included: a systematic literature review; political economy analyses on private sector roles; sanitation value chain analyses; motivators and barriers for enterprises; water service outcomes for the poor; associations and business support mechanisms; women’s enterprise participation; and life-cycle costs for rural water service delivery.

PROJECT | 2021
Learning about private sector engagement in WASH
ISF-UTS is leading a learning initiative for the Water for Women Fund on how the private sector can contribute to improved WASH services, and how women and marginalised groups can be encouraged and supported to actively participate in the sector. The learning series covers three-prongs related to WASH organisations engagement with small scale private sector actors:
1) sustainability of the private sector
2) fostering inclusion through the private sector
3) thinking reflexively about engaging with the private sector
