Developing planning instruments and strategies that deliver healthy, equitable and sustainable urban and regional environments is a major challenge. Our award-winning research team works with communities, government, non-government organisations and the private sector to respond to key sustainability challenges, delivering planning instruments and strategic advice for use in both urban and regional areas.

Why planning and strategy at ISF?

ISF has a strong focus on research translation and engagement. Our team includes qualified and registered planners and architects with extensive experience in urban and regional planning, design and building processes.

We have a focus on the following issues:

  • Human health and wellbeing
  • Environmental health
  • Transport
  • Infrastructure
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • Food systems
  • The design of place
  • Smart cities and housing sustainability
  • How to engage with communities

Our planning and strategy expertise can be applied to projects of all scales, from precincts through to entire cities and their impact on surrounding regions. We use a variety of quantitative and qualitative analyses, including geospatial analyses, to offer objective, honest and impartial advice based on the best available evidence.

What we offer

Our expertise spans three key areas:

  • Understanding barriers to change and future opportunities. We provide evidence- based insights into key ecological and social challenges, such as climate change and communicable diseases, in urban and regional contexts. Through this work, we can identify opportunities to deliver evidence-based approaches to more sustainable urban and regional futures.

  • Developing strategies and planning instruments to drive change. We work with government, the private sector and NGOs to identify and develop strategies and planning instruments that are tailored to the needs of individual clients. From this foundation, we realise site potential to deliver healthy, equitable and sustainable urban and regional environments based on sound evidence.

  • Developing technologies to support decision making. We use geospatial and smart city technologies to inform urban and regional change processes, empowering people with the information they need to make informed decisions. This work includes:

    • the use of data analytics, infographics and visualisations to create meaningful and compelling information and advice and to solve planning challenges.
    • understanding how environmental, demographic and social trends can impact decision making and strategic planning
    • the use of spatial analytics to understand a changing world and help clients identify new opportunities.
