Start your AI invigilated exam and verify your identity
This guide details the steps for an AI invigilated exam using Canvas. Your exam time doesn’t start until your identity is verified. AI invigilated exams do not need to be scheduled with ProctorU.
Before you begin your AI invigilated exam in Canvas, you’ll need to verify your identity with ProctorU. This is important to the exam process as it allows us to maintain academic integrity and confirm that the right student is sitting the right exam.
Before you're ready to sit your exam, make sure you have:
logged into MyStudentAdmin and provided your consent to supply ProctorU with personal information (like your name)
created an account with ProctorU using your UTS student email address
installed the Guardian browser on your computer
a valid UTS Student ID card, or other government-issued photo ID like a driver’s license or passport.
Having your identity verified before your exam can take 5 to 15 minutes but remember – your exam time doesn’t start until your identity has been verified. There’s no need to rush this process.
Open the Guardian browser on your computer (Download the Guardian browser if you haven’t already).
Log in to http://canvas.uts.edu.au/ and go to the subject (course) where your ProctorU exam will be held.
Select ‘Quizzes’ or ‘Assignments’ on the left-hand side course menu.
Once you've found your exam, click on your ‘Exam’ to see more information about it – clicking on the name of the exam here won’t begin the exam.
On the Exam page, you’ll see more information about your exam like its weighting, how many questions, when it’s available, and its duration. When you’re ready to begin the identity verification process, click on ‘Take the Quiz’ button to begin the ProctorU process.
If you are using the Guardian browser, you will be prompted with the ProctorU welcome screen. If this appears, continue.
If you are prompted to enter a password before accessing your exam, check that you are using the Guardian browser (not Chrome, Firefox, or any other web browser).
From here, ProctorU will present you with a series of checks containing information about your exam. ProctorU will also check your computer settings are set up correctly. Please follow any prompts and allow ProctorU to turn on the settings it needs.
As part of this series of checks, ProctorU will ask you to verify your identity by taking your photo. Align your face with the guide lines to ensure the technology can correctly record your face. ProctorU will also ask to take a photo of your photo ID so that it can verify your identity before the exam. You can use your UTS student ID card for this step. If you don’t have a UTS student ID card, you can use your driver’s licence, or passport.
- Once all verification is complete, follow the prompts where you will be asked to set up your exam space. You will then be prompted with a Good Luck screen before you officially begin your exam.
When you are ready, you will be taken to your exam in Canvas and your exam time will start. The identity verification process can take a few minutes, but it will not cut into your exam time.
After your exam
After your AI invigilated exam, you'll be logged out of Canvas automatically. Don't worry, this doesn't mean your exam wasn't submitted correctly. If you'd like to check your exam was submitted successfully, log back in to Canvas, navigate to your exam, and check that you have made an attempt.
Another way to check that your exam has been submitted successfully is by the ProctorU pop-up survey which is only shown after your exam is submitted. After your exam, you'll be asked to complete this quick survey. We encourage you to complete this survey.
Support
During your exam, you can get support from ProctorU using the live chat support function within the Guardian browser or ProctorU support lines (Australian free call: 1800 841 822). You can continue to do your exam while using the live chat support function.
