Check well in advance that you have all the equipment you need to sit your online exam at home.

Sitting an exam online means that you’ll have to ensure your have your own device and a suitable space set up at home.

We’ve prepared a checklist to help students prepare for online exam this session. Some items are needed for all exams, while others are just for AI invigilated exams. If you need to check what type of exams you have, you can do so on your exam timetable on My Student Admin. The type of exam you have is shown under Exam Conditions.

For more information on each exam type, visit the Online Exams page.

Check out the Online Exams page for more information on how your data and privacy will be protected during your AI invigilated exam.

Computer (for all online exams)

You’ll need a laptop or desktop computer at home to access your exam (tablets and phones cannot be used).

Make sure the computer you’re using has completed all system updates to avoid a restart in the middle of your exam.

You can only use one computer monitor for AI invigilated exams. If you typically use two or more monitors, then you’ll have to disconnect them for the duration of your exam.

I don’t have a computer: Contact your subject coordinator.

Microphone (for AI invigilated exams only)

If your exam is AI invigilated, you’ll need a working microphone. It can be inbuilt or detached from your computer.  Most computers come with inbuilt microphones and speakers. This is part of how ProctorU helps us ensure academic integrity during exams.

You can't wear earphones or headphones during your exam so a microphone built into these devices is not suitable.

I don’t have a microphone: Borrow or purchase a microphone as soon as possible to avoid delay in having the necessary equipment.

Webcam (for AI invigilated exams only)

If your exam is AI invigilated, you’ll need a working webcam. It can be inbuilt or detached from your computer.  Most laptops come with an inbuilt webcam. This is important as it enables ProctorU to verify your identity at the start of your exam, and to ensure academic integrity throughout the exam.

I don’t have a webcam: Borrow or purchase a webcam as soon as possible to avoid delay in having the necessary equipment.

Internet (for all online exams)

For AI invigilated exams and timed LMS exams, you need uninterrupted internet access to progress through your exam.

If your exam type is take-home, then you only need internet access to start your exam, and to submit it.

I don’t have reliable internet: If you disconnect from the internet during your exam, don’t worry. You should try to reconnect as soon as possible and continue with your exam.

If your internet drops out for a longer period, or you experience technical difficulties beyond your control during your online exam, you can apply for special consideration within 2 days after your exam. You’ll need to provide evidence of what happened, like screen captures, reports from your service provider, error reports, and details on the duration of the issue. You can learn more about this on the Online Exams page.

Guardian browser (for AI invigilated exams only)

If your exam is AI invigilated, you’ll need to use the Guardian browser to log in to Canvas and take your exam.

Photo ID (for AI invigilated exams only)

To verify your identity, use your Student ID card or other government-issued photo ID like a driver's license or passport. The AI software will take a photo of you before you sit your exam and a photo of your ID to help verify your identity.

Learn more about how your privacy is protected and how your data is secured on the Online Exams page.

We want you to be fully informed about the invigilation process. That's why we're asking you to read and agree to a statement in My Student Admin about ProctorU, what information they collect, and why, before you sit your exam. Learn more about this process, and how to sign up to ProctorU, here.

I don’t have a UTS student ID card: If you don’t have a UTS Student ID card, you can use other government issued photo ID like a driver's license or passport. Please obtain your UTS student ID card as soon as possible, as you will also need it outside of exam periods (e.g. for student travel concession, access to campus facilities like the Library, etc).

A quiet, private, well-lit space

This is a must for AI invigilated exams, but it’s a good idea to make sure your space is well set up for all exam types.

Some things to plan for:

  • Quiet: Let family or housemates know you'll be sitting an exam, to minimise noise/interruptions.

  • Private: Plan to take your exam in a separate room like a study or a bedroom, not a shared kitchen or living room. For AI invigilated exams, you’ll need to clear your space of any non-permitted materials, and you must be alone for the duration of your exam.

  • Well-lit: This is especially important for AI invigilated exams, to ensure clear supervision for the duration of the exam.

If you have all these things, then you’re ready to sit your online exam. Keep an eye on your student email inbox for more information and remember to check the Exam FAQ and the Online Exams page regularly for updates.
