UTS researcher to lead Sydney Institute of Marine Science
Professor Martina Doblin has been appointed as the new CEO and Director for the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS). Professor Doblin, who leads the Productive Coasts research team in the UTS Climate Change Cluster, takes over from Professor Peter Steinberg, who steps down after 11 years.
Under Professor Steinberg’s leadership SIMS has grown from a single lab and aquarium at Chowder Bay to its current status as one of Australia’s nationally significant marine science institutes.
SIMS Chair, Peter Cochrane, describes Peter as “an engaging and inspiring leader who will be leaving the CEO role with an enviable list of major achievements at SIMS”.
During Professor Steinberg’s tenure SIMS has developed major marine science and outreach programs via a strongly collaborative approach with its community of partner universities, national marine stakeholders, philanthropic supporters and the broader public. The delivery of marine science expertise with a strong solution-based focus is evident through SIMS’ green engineering and ecological restoration work and membership of advisory bodies that influence State and Commonwealth environmental policy.
I’m excited to create new opportunities to advance the resilience of our marine environment which is being increasingly impacted by a changing and more uncertain climate. My goal is for SIMS to support innovation, and enable diverse researchers to realise this mission - Professor Doblin.
Professor Doblin, a biological oceanographer with a long association with SIMS, has experience leading nationally significant research programs, with a history of many successful collaborations with industry and government.
“I’m excited to create new opportunities to advance the resilience of our marine environment which is being increasingly impacted by a changing and more uncertain climate. My goal is for SIMS to support innovation, and enable diverse researchers to realise this mission, “ Professor Doblin said.
UTS is a foundation member of SIMS together with Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney. Professor Doblin will start her new role at SIMS on 1 July 2020.
