It helps when developing a complex project to think systematically. In this project students responded to a brief for the Central Station Revamp Project provided by Transport NSW. Acting as five key stakeholders (the business, commuters, government, the main contractor and the client) each student team presented innovative ideas for the redesign of this major transport hub. Systems thinking uses a formalised approach to rich pictures and a technique called CATWOE (Customer, Actors, Transformation, Worldview, Owner and Environment) analysis. A mock town hall meeting was held to mimic the participatory planning process. Client representatives at a senior level of decision-making for the client attended the workshops to provide feedback and assess the student presentations.
