The Renaissance saw the development of increasingly precise and smaller clocks and clocks installed in public spaces where they changed perceptions of time, working and social habits.

In a bid for greater accuracy Da Vinci’s clock has separate weight ‘trains’ and escapements, one each for hours and minutes. By building two mechanisms into his timepiece he may actually have doubled the potential for error.

Da Vinci was interested in expanding the use of weight controlled spring mechanisms beyond clocks and applied the technology to the automation of a file-cutting machine. He also proposed a full-scale clockwork car.
