Assessment
During your clinical placement, you will be assessed against the professional standards and codes of practice for nursing.
There are two formal assessments in every clinical placement, and many clinical subjects have additional clinical skill appraisals or clinical competency assessments to complete.
Clinical assessment form
During every placement your clinical facilitator will complete a Clinical Assessment Form (CAF) on MyPlacement. The CAF is an official record of your clinical performance, clinical skills completion and placement attendance.
- You will be required to complete two written reflections during the placement which will be reviewed by your Clinical Facilitator.
- Your Clinical Facilitator will award you an overall rating of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory for the Clinical Placement.
Formative assessment
- Undertaken during the clinical placement, usually half-way.
- You’ll receive constructive feedback about your progress in relation to your clinical learning objectives including strategies to promote further learning and development.
- If you are not meeting the learning objectives, you will receive an unsatisfactory grade you’ll be given a Learning Support Plan
- A Learning Support Plan will provide you with strategies and support to further develop your clinical practice to achieve a satisfactory grade.
Summative assessment
- Completed at the end of the clinical placement
- You will receive an appraisal of your overall clinical performance..
- You need to be marked as satisfactory on your summative assessment to pass the placement and subject.
Learning objectives
Learning objectives give you goals for your placement and act as your assessment criteria.
There are two sets of learning objectives for your clinical placement,
- The first links to the placement and is listed on your Clinical Assessment Form (CAF)
- The second is outlined in your course handbook for each clinical placement subject
See the UTS Handbook for details.
Querying a mark or grade
As with any subject within your degree, in certain circumstances, you can query your result. The Student Administration Unit website outlines the process for querying a mark or grade.
What if I don’t agree with my facilitator?
If a conflict arises between you and your facilitator, you’re encouraged to raise the issue with them first. If for any reason you are unable to do so, please contact the Clinical Practice Unit and you will be directed to the appropriate channels so that you can be assisted.
