DAB students are critical thinkers who can develop and articulate new approaches, concepts and designs, thanks to our emphasis on both practice and theory.
Creating critical thinkers
At DAB, all of our courses place a strong emphasis on the importance of both practice and theory. This means that our students are immersed in the history and critical thinking that defines their chosen practice, whether it is fashion design or project management.
Why is this approach important? If you don’t have an engagement with the trends and theory that drive industry, innovation and creativity, it is difficult to create work that truly stands out. By engaging with the academic world, you will develop the insight, vocabulary and confidence to see your ideas through to the end.
Leading the way
Our graduates are able draw on these critical faculties to develop and articulate new approaches, concepts and designs in their chosen profession. This is why they are so highly regarded by industry and why our top students win major awards on such a consistent basis. Here are some of our recent success stories.
Rachael Zheng, B Design in Fashion and Textiles
Rachael is the 2015 winner of the $25,000 Target National Graduate Showcase prize at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival. But the real reward is a commission to design a ready-to-wear capsule collection due for release in Target stores in early November 2015.
Vanessa Emirian, B Design in Fashion and Textiles
Vanessa’s business plan for a fashion-related product received the $10,000 prize in the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industry Award 2014 from the NSW Business of Commerce. Vanessa will use the money to set up her own business. Given that she also won the textiles category at the 2015 Design institute of Australia Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA), we are confident that she will succeed with her plans for a ready-to-wear collection.
Víctor Alejandro Martínez Contreras, M Architecture
In 2015, Víctor won the NSW Digital Innovation Award in Architecture at the 2015 Architecture Institute of Australia’s Graduate and Student Awards (NSW Chapter) for his project “Field Embassy”. The project, inspired by the Earth’s magnetic field, was completed as part of his Master of Architecture. Victor is now working in research into new methodologies of construction.
Katherine Tambouras, M Property Development
Katherine decided to follow a career in the property and valuation industry after a family friend assured her that it would lead to a successful, professionally rewarding future. “I originally completed the Advance Diploma in Property Services – Valuation at TAFE and was pleased to find out that upon completion we were eligible to apply for the Graduate Diploma in Property Development at UTS,” says Katherine.
