We understand that sometimes unplanned living expenses can pop up. To help with a short-term cash-flow problem, we may provide an interest-free Student loan to enrolled UTS students.

Who can apply?

You may apply for the UTS interest-free loan if you are:

  • Currently enrolled in an award course and are able to repay the loan in the agreed time
  • Currently enrolled and not 'potentially complete' or within 10 weeks of completing your degree, unless pre-approved by Financial Assistance
  • Not on leave of absence or facing exclusion
  • Non-award and UTS College students are not eligible for loans

To receive a student loan, applicants must demonstrate a genuine need to borrow money related to their studies.

  • Student loans are available for bills, rent, one-off living expenses, emergency costs, course-related costs (excluding tuition fees) and other costs, such as medical bills.
  • Interest is not charged.

How to apply

  1. Complete the online application form. If the link doesn't open properly, please copy and paste it into your browser.
  2. Ensure you have uploaded the most recent 90-days of transactions for all bank accounts in your name in PDF format, to the application form and the following relevant supporting documents:

*Supporting documents

Please consider the following support documents when applying for the loan:

  • For expenses: Documents which confirm your need for a student loan; these may include bills, overdue bills and/or notifications of utility debt, proof of rent or bond owing; quotes for other requirements (such as computer repairs; required technology and gadgets etc), or dental procedures and other medical specialist costs
  • For income: Documents which confirm your income, such as an income statement or payslips, and Centrelink payments if not already listed in your bank documents

Repayments and loan extensions

 Planning your loan repayment schedule

  • You can choose your loan repayment plan in the online Loan Application Form. The following is relevant:
  • Repayments may be deferred for up-to 3 months and scheduled over a further 12 month period BUT must be fully repaid before you complete your course
  • Loan repayment details are forwarded to the applicant on the Loan Repayment Schedule (LRS)  after your application has been accepted by UTS,
  • You are required to sign and date the LRS, which is the contract for the loan with UTS. Once received, UTS will transfer the funds to your nominated bank account.
  • If you have difficulty in meeting any loan repayment date, you must contact Financial Assistance to request a 'loan extension'
  • All loans are legally binding
  • Note: Please be wary of scams which offer to pay your tuition fees, bills and loans at a discounted rate

You will not be able to re-enroll unless your repayments are up-to-date, or extensions have been granted.

If you default on your loan repayment dates the University can::

  • block your access to your UTS CASS account and UTS email and systems
  • withhold your results
  • refuse re-enrolment for the next semester
  • not allow you to graduate

Please contact us to avoid any of these outcomes. Appointments can be booked through reception on 9514 1177
