The UTS Master of Animation and Visualisation is a hands on, one year accelerated postgraduate degree developed in partnership with the industry leading 3D animation studio Animal Logic. Designed for students with creative professionals this program allows you to study your chosen specialisation in 3D animation or visual effects, learning the latest industry practices in a professional, immersive studio.

Drawing together students from a broad range of backgrounds, including digital artists and designers, 3D modellers, animators, visual effects artists, computer science and IT graduates, this program offers you the opportunity to collaborate and produce large scale, studio quality animated films and visual effects projects. What you’ll study

To enrol in this program, you’ll need an undergraduate qualification or equivalent workplace experience in one area of specialisation. As a student, you’ll undertake three studio subjects, where you’ll build your expertise in one of the following areas: art department, modelling, rigging, animation, pre-visualisation/layout, surfacing, effects, lighting, compositing, technical direction or production management.

Working with students across a wide range of disciplines, you will develop and produce a studio-level 3D animation short film. Upon completing the course, you will be ready to enter the workforce with advanced creative and technical skills, as well as experience working as part of a professional team.

The Connected Studio

In the first studio, you will work together to develop the story for the year's 3D animated short film. After deciding on a storyline, you will break into your specialised departments to complete the pre-production of the project.
The Collaboration Studio

In the second studio, you will explore new visualisation technologies which will be used to produce your animated project. Previously, these have included augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), real-time, virtual production and visual effects.
The Challenge Studio

During this final studio students complete the 3D animated short film and any other outstanding projects to industry standards. At the end of the session, we celebrate with our End of Year Showcase, where we invite key industry partners to view the incredible work the students’ accomplished throughout the year, and give students the opportunity to network with potential future employers.

Course highlights

Admissions information

This course has been developed in partnership with the industry-leading 3D animation studio Animal Logic and is offered through the UTS Animal Logic Academy. It is designed for aspiring professionals seeking specialised roles in the 3D animation and visual effects industries. The course focuses on developing highly specialised skills in specific areas of 3D animation and visual effects production. It does this through the application of students’ specialist skills to high-quality, industry style projects.

You will develop your creative ability, technical expertise and collaborative practice under industry expert mentorship.

Because the course and the studio are co-designed with Animal Logic, you will learn industry practices in an authentic studio environment with access to cutting-edge know-how, tools and technologies.

You will develop industry level skills in your chosen area of specialisation, such as: art department, modelling, rigging, animation, surfacing, lighting, effects, compositing, technical direction or production coordination.

Through working collaboratively on large scale projects, you will also refine your critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.

Learning occurs in a state-of-the-art digital studio. Production mirrors professional workflows which offers you practical, hands-on experience, supported by industry-standard technology with professional guidance.

Graduates emerge with advanced knowledge and project experience in their chosen area of specialisation, ready to accelerate their entry into 3D animation, visual effects and visualisation studios.
The course provides challenges and opportunities that encourage exploration and skills-building across the spectrum of roles in digital production, 3D animation, digital asset creation, visual effects and emerging visualisation disciplines. Collaborative work practices guide the development of strong competencies in critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and effective communication in a production environment. Graduates are able to work productively and effectively in a professional-style workplace.
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
Applicants must have the following:
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study AND Training and experience in their specialised area of 3D animation and/or visualisation production
Applicants without a tertiary qualification must have:
- Advanced levels of knowledge and skill through self-directed learning evidenced through a portfolio of work
- AND one of the following:
  - Completed Australian diploma or advanced diploma, or overseas equivalent, in a related field of study AND A minimum of 1 year full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional experience
  - A minimum of 2 years full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional experience
  - Completion of at least three industry short courses (e.g. UTS microcredential or equivalent) in a related field of study AND A minimum of 1 year full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant professional experience
  - Be a minimum age of 21 years AND Have employment and/or project experience demonstrating maturity to undertake postgraduate studies
All applicants must also have:
- An interest in the course and demonstrated understanding of the opportunities present in Animation and Visualisation
Eligible applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Applicants must nominate one specialisation in 3D animation or visualisation production at the time of application. The available specialisations are:

Art Department (concept art, environment art, storyboarding, character development), Pre-Visualisation/Layout, Modelling, Rigging, Animation, Visual Effects, Surfacing/Texturing, Production Management, Technical Direction, Lighting, Compositing

Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application
- Curriculum Vitae ANDStatement of service in one of the following formats:
  - A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
  - A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
  - A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
  - An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
  - A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)
- Personal statement: (300 words) outlining reasons for studying the Graduate Certificate of Animation and Visualisation at UTS
- Portfolio: (max. 10 pages, PDF format) demonstrating skill in the applicant’s nominated specialisation as follows:
  - Applicants for digital artist specialisations: include a link to the applicant’s showreel (maximum video duration 2mins) on Vimeo, YouTube or a QuickTime file with clear captions of what the applicant’s role was in each sequence presented.
  - Applicants for technical direction specialisation (without a showreel): provide documented experience in coding/programming for digital production or visualisation and include links to coding projects on sites such as GitHub.
  - Applicants for production management specialisation (without a showreel): provide documented project coordination and/or event management experience

As a postgraduate student, you'll be responsible for covering your own tuition fees.

- Indicative total tuition fee: $59,225.25
You can choose to pay your fees upfront per session, or if you’re eligible, you can defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan. This loan helps you cover all or part of your tuition fees. Keep in mind that applications for this loan are specific to each course.

Additional Costs

Your tuition fees do not include:
- The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
- Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
- Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).
