Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs About Stuttering (UTBAS) scales
The Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs About Stuttering (UTBAS) scales provide the clinician with a comprehensive checklist of the negative thoughts experienced by adults who stutter. The UTBAS was developed by examining the thought diaries of adults who stutter, who were having treatment for social anxiety disorder and related psychological conditions. The scales can be used to identify thoughts to target and challenge speech and psychological therapies. Higher UTBAS scores are associated with an increased likelihood of meeting DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorders. Normative data allow the clinician to determine the decile in which their clients score, further assisting with clinical decision making. In sum, the UTBAS provides the clinician with a speedy, reliable, and valid way to explore the inner mental life of their clients who stutter.
