Associate Professor Thanh Nguyen conducts leading research in satellite image processing. She visited UTS from VNU University of Engineering and Technology under the Faculty KTP (Engineering and IT) Visiting Fellow program.
Mapping the future
Associate Professor Thanh Nguyen is an expert in environmental data analysis, producing 3D maps from aerial imagery to help understand the spread of pollution and temperature gradients within a city.
Her work in satellite image processing stems from a passion for looking at the world from a different angle.
When I look down from space, I see both the beauty and the problems of each place. It makes me want to share my views with others, in order to find a solution and save that beauty.
She visited UTS under the Faculty KTP (Engineering and IT) Visiting Fellow program to continue her work with Associate Professor Stuart Perry from the School of Data and Electrical Engineering.
As part of her stay, she met with academics across the Faculty and the wider University, as well as meeting with industry and government to discuss projects in VR technology, urban planning and 3D data creation.
These links with local companies were a highlight of her visit, giving her the opportunity both to understand more about current industry challenges and to witness the strength of university-industry links in Australia.
Visiting UTS in person gave her time to discuss and more deeply understand different research and its applications, inspiring more ideas and other possibilities to connect.
Both UTS and VNU-UET have a strong focus on research and the application of innovative technologies. Associate Professor Nguyen hopes to see further joint research projects arise from this partnership.
The collaboration between our two institutions is a bridge for research exchange and technology transfer between Australian and Vietnam.
