The School of International Studies and Education offers extraordinary opportunities for teaching, learning and research in the humanities and social sciences.
Welcome from the Head of the School of International Studies and Education
We recognise the possibilities of education as lifelong and life-wide; both in and out of formal educational settings. We offer courses that embed understandings of diverse places and spaces, explorations of society and social behaviour emanating from everyday life.
Our courses, teaching and learning
Our courses range from Bachelor-level courses through to Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas, plus higher degree research, Masters, PhD and professional doctorates. Our course content has been built with significant local and international industry input and is informed by our highly focused research that shapes teaching and learning practices around the world. We believe in a global perspective. We operate within multilingual and multicultural classrooms, some of which occur within global exchange, international teaching placements, short-term volunteer experiences or a combined International Studies degree.
The School teaches international studies, global studies, and language studies. New social science courses on offer include criminology and a number of combined sustainability and environment degrees. We offer award programs in adult learning and literacy studies, applied linguistics and TESOL, primary and secondary teacher education, as well as educational learning and leadership.
Our research and engagement
The School is home to internationally renowned teaching and research staff who bring both academic and industry-relevant knowledge into the classroom. A group of our researchers engage with notions of transcultural realities encompassing the study of localised cultural and social formations, transcultural and intercultural dialogues and practices, contact zones, and the significance of encounters with difference. Our Centre for Research on Education in a Digital Society is leading cutting edge research and collaborations with schools and industry.
Our engagement linkages — whether it’s professional placements, guest lectures or industry-led projects – will introduce you to new networks that could launch or reshape your future career.
Our School within a dynamic university of technology
We are located at the centre of UTS’s world-leading campus — step beyond our building and you’ll find yourself on a vibrant, interconnected, technology-driven campus in the heart of Sydney. You’ll also be walking distance to the best that the city has to offer. We’ve got public transport networks and key services right on our doorstep too.
As a student in our School, you stand to gain the theoretical and practical skills required to be a driver of positive change in the wider world. You’ll graduate with a range of understandings, skills and intercultural competencies with options for global connections that will make you highly valued by prospective employers.
I look forward to welcoming you to UTS.
