Bachelor of Global Studies (Legal Studies)
I was always interested in studying international relations but wasn't sure which path I wanted to take. I was attracted to the Bachelor of Global Studies degree because it covered a wide range of international studies content and allowed me to specialise in my chosen major (Legal Studies) and sub-majors.
The practical assignments and internship were also a major factor for my selection of the UTS Bachelor of Global Studies over other international studies degrees offered at other universities. I enjoyed the practical assignments as they brought a ‘real-life’ element to the degree, which not only expanded my knowledge but also taught me practical skills that prepared me for the realities of the workforce.
As part of the Bachelor of Global Studies, I studied Chinese language and culture and completed one semester of exchange at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. I had studied Chinese throughout high school so I wanted to continue my studies throughout university. I also completed a Chinese language course in Beijing and received a grant from the UTS BUILD program.
My career in consulting
My previous role consisted of a wide range of responsibilities as Business Manager at Think Global Consulting. I managed marketing projects, contributed to consulting projects for our Australian and Chinese clients, organised business missions to China and Asia, wrote articles and blogs and managed the office admin. I was attracted to it because it combined my interest and expertise in Chinese with international relations through business consulting. I've now recently moved across to Elton Consulting, in a Graduate Consultant position.
Advice to Bachelor of Global Studies students
I would encourage current students to take advantage of expanding their degree by studying a language, going on exchange, being involved in the university’s co-curricular programs or completing internships — future employers highly regard these types of experiences. I would encourage prospective students to pick this degree because of the practical experience involved. The faculty has worked hard to include assignments and coursework that mirror real-life, which is extremely valuable when you enter the workforce. In addition, the tutors and lecturers are engaging and wonderful — I loved how they all came from very diverse backgrounds.
