UTS, Australia’s top-ranked young university, has a strong collaborative relationship with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata.

As a culmination of many years of collaboration, ISI – one of the world's leading centres for training and research in computer science, statistics, quantitative economics and related sciences – and UTS have established a joint research cluster. They are addressing real-world problems at an international level on focus areas such as:

  • artificial intelligence
  • character and video recognition
  • document analysis
  • biometrics.

The cluster enables PhD students from Australia and India to work closely together, and for industry to bring forward upcoming projects to be investigated.

Research degrees for ISI students

UTS offers the opportunity for high-performing Indian students to study a funded UTS PhD degree that will be co-located and co-supervised between ISI in Kolkata, India and UTS in Sydney, Australia.

This PhD program is designed to develop the leaders of the future, and it offers a supportive, multidisciplinary research environment where students can study alongside world-leading experts in their field.

UTS PhD application process for ISI students

Industry research projects

UTS and ISI are currently inviting industry to bring projects to ISI in Kolkata, India where the opportunity lies to work with ISI students to research and provide solutions to complex industry problems.

Through this partnership, industry partners will have access to UTS research labs in Australia. One of these labs is the UTS Tech Lab.

This brand new research facility is home to:

  • a range of multidisciplinary engineering and IT labs
  • meeting rooms
  • seminar spaces
  • collaborative workspaces.

The facility is more than 9,000m2 and has been designed specifically to bring university and industry together to innovate.
