Meet Kim

Originally from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Kim An Lim became interested in UTS after learning about its world-class facilities, exciting coursework, and high ranking. UTS is ranked #1 in Australia for Computer Science & Engineering according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2022 and is ranked as Australia’s #1 young university according to Times Higher Education 2022. As a student, Kim pursued a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and majored in Enterprise System Development with a sub-major in Interaction Design. In 2015, as one of the top students in his class, Kim won the $2,000 Information Technology Undergraduate Achievement Prize for the autumn and spring semesters. In 2018, he made the Dean’s List.

“I enjoyed the hands-on experience with technology the most. There were subjects where I got to play with Raspberry Pi and Arduino boards. I learned Android application programming for the first time at UTS. Seeing my code come to life and being able to interact with it on my phone amazed me. I was so excited to work with the latest technology and produce tangible results in the real world.”

For his coursework, Kim had access to UTS’ state-of-the-art facilities like Protospace—Australia’s most advanced  additive manufacturing facility.

“I found Protospace very exciting! I got to use the laser cutting machine and see the 3D printer in action. The networking lab was really cool and I learned all about routers and switches.”

To prepare for a career in technology, Kim had many opportunities to make industry connections and gain professional experience. He learned about the tech industry and careers in UX/UI design from guest speakers in Dr. Tuck Wah Leong’s interaction design classes. He even travelled to Bangalore, India to complete a 10-week, software developer internship with Infosys—an IT services consulting firm.

“My duties included creating mobile applications. One of them was to help staff navigate the huge Infosys campus with maps. Another was to create a prototype for tracking of transportation, and alert admins when drivers deviated from a prescribed path. I completed both of the projects and had time to learn about Machine Learning and Data Analytics from my fellow interns.”

Kim also joined U:PASS, a program to help students with difficult subjects. As a Leader and Design Tutor, he met with his peers to help them thrive in the university environment. Kim also designed several applications to support fellow students.

“I made an application that helps users navigate the Faculty of Engineering and IT Building, an application to book English language support sessions at UTS HELPS Centre, and an application to help students stay focused on their tasks using the Pomodoro technique.”

After graduation, Kim began his career with an internship as an Analyst Programmer at Pulse Software—an Australian SaaS company developing business process management software.

With my degree from UTS, it was an easy entry to the company because the subjects that I had taken matched up with the responsibilities of the role, which included analysing the current system, providing improvement recommendations, and developing enterprise level software. At the end of the internship, I was offered a full-time position.

Today, Kim still works at Pulse Software now as a UX Lead and Product Owner. His responsibilities include developing a new design system and library, mentoring graduate designers, engaging with stakeholders, and consulting with leadership to ensure features align with strategy.
