Modelling the Geometry and Time of Construction Using 4D Methods

Julie Jupp

Much of what drives the performance of a construction company is what it can build and how fast. New methods are emerging that combine the 3 dimensional geometry of a building information model (BIM) with a fourth dimension of time, represented in the duration and sequence of activities within the construction schedule. This is a powerful decision-making tool throughout the pre-construction and construction phases of a building project. Using real-world (and often live) projects, intensive computing labs and an industry mentor program, students develop practical skills in 4D-planning methods. Industry speakers and mentors demonstrate recent case studies and show how 4D simulation facilities greater levels of communication, site management, time and cost management, procurement, safety management, and schedule quality. Traditional scheduling methods, together with recent approaches to lean construction (last planner, location-based management and flow line concepts) are also examined. The subject culminates with an industry-sponsored event known as Skills Sync, which provides an opportunity for students and industry to connect and recognise outstanding student achievements through an awards ceremony.
