What uni life is really like during lockdown
Just like you, UTS has transitioned to working online. We’re navigating through the new world of Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Hangouts, all while making sure we have the best virtual background. So what is university like when we’re not on campus?
Student life never stops
One of the most exciting parts of uni is being able to join societies and make new friends. Luckily, this has not been impacted due to lockdown. Our societies have taken video meetings to the next level with the Business Society, Law Students’ Society and UTS Society of Communications jointly running a UTS Got Talent Competition - all in the online space.
Classes haven't changed
It certainly feels different talking to your teachers through a computer screen (especially when they use virtual backgrounds and look like they’re on a beach in Hawaii), but for the majority of classes, they’ve been able to transition online. We’re still able to work on group assignments and chat to our friends in breakout rooms. Although it’s a bit more challenging (and funny) when internet connections drop out, its the next best thing to working with each other in person.
Mastering motivation
It can be a bit harder to stay motivated when you’re at home. We’ve found that taking regular breaks, going on walks or simply stretching can be a great way to refocus and maintain your concentration. Even doing something as simple as creating a group study session on Zoom can help you stay motivated and in touch with your friends.
There is still support
While it’s useful to chat to teachers online, sometimes you need a bit of extra help. The majority of support services available at UTS have moved online, meaning we can still get help with assignments and utilise additional services such as the Medical Service and Counselling Service.
Keep the social in social distancing
Not being able to catch up with friends after class or see them on the weekends can feel isolating. It’s important to make sure you keep in touch, whether it’s sending each other TikToks, organising a Zoom trivia or a Netflix watch party, it’s bound to raise everyone’s spirits.
