What did you do before you started your course?
I came to UTS straight from school.
What motivated you to study this degree/major?
I always enjoyed science and was interested in TV shows such as NCIS and Bones and wanted to find out more about the science used to help law enforcement agencies. I wanted to find out if the reality was better than the TV portrayal.
What do you enjoy most about your degree?
The access and exposure to lots of different analytical instruments and getting to use them in the practical sessions.
Why did you choose to study at UTS?
UTS offered the forensic science area of study I wanted in the chemistry specialty I was most interested in. The course was also very practical based. I also had a great experience at one of the open days I attended where an academic drew a picture of the new crime scene house which was about to be constructed. The enthusiasm of this academic was evident and was passed onto me.
What is it like to study at UTS Science?
It is a balance of working hard and getting to play with expensive toys. The weekly practicals help reinforce all of the concepts learnt during the lectures. The academics are also really helpful and most will put in the extra effort to help you understand the content and give you the best chance at passing.
Is there any advice you would give to students studying this degree?
Use the resources available to you. U:PASS and the Maths Study Centre are great places to learn and find people with the same struggles as you. They are also great places to make friends. Also don’t just dwell on the numbers or letters of your results. Make sure you get feedback as the feedback is what will help you improve.
What would you like to do once you complete by your degree
Once I complete my Bachelors degree I hope to continue on and do Honours.
What other activities do you participate/do at uni?
I am a mentor for Principles of Scientific Practice subject.
