What did you do before you started your course?
I came to university straight from high school so I was just a high school student. I did do some volunteer work with environmental NGOs so I knew the path I wanted to take.
What motivated you to study this degree/major?
I've always been passionate about the natural environment and conservation. Seeing the GBR at a young age showed me the wonders of sea life. Not enough people think about marine threats since it's not easily seen, I wanted to identify these issues.
What do you enjoy most about your degree?
I love the practical element! I've snorkeled with sharks and moray eels, and have had hands on experience using various research equipment. We've had great field trips to the GBR, rainforests and various locations around Sydney.
I also love being able to look out at the ocean and understand what goes on beneath.
Why did you choose to study at UTS?
I heard from family and friends about the great reputation of UTS. The emphasis on practical learning and array of different field trips really caught my attention.
What is it like to study at UTS Science?
It's GREAT! Don't let the campus size fool you. It is full of life and very sociable. One thing I love about studying at UTS is how approachable the lecturers are. They are all still involved in research and are able to fill the lectures with information about recent findings and issues.
Is there any advice you would give to students studying this degree?
Keep an open mind. There are a lot of different pathways to follow with marine biology so play to your passions and strengths. There's no need to limit yourself.
What would you like to do once you complete by your degree?
I would like to go into policy work. I think we need more scientific minds in non-scientific fields in order to communicate issues and processes to a wider audience and implement change.
