I love the focus on innovation, entrepreneurship and community that UTS has.
What degree you are currently studying?
Bachelor Advanced Science (Environmental Biotechnology) / Bachelor Creative Intelligence and Innovation
What is your major?
Environmental Biotechnology
What did you do before you started your course?
Before starting at UTS I was a high school graduate with a keen interest in the environment and marine world.
What motivated you to study this degree/major?
I have always wanted to study the intricacies of science and the environment in the hope that one day I can return my skills and knowledge to make an impact upon small communities and towns like the ones I grew up in.
What do you enjoy most about your degree?
My favourite part of my degree is meeting people in industry and research as it allows me to see another perceptive of science beyond the bench, discovering exactly where science makes an impact and how research and study gives back to our community.
Why did you choose to study at UTS?
I came to UTS to challenge myself to work hard and to do my best effort possible. While UTS is not my closest university, I study here because I love the research and hands-on opportunities I get through my degree, and I love the focus on innovation, entrepreneurship and community that UTS has.
What is it like to study at UTS Science?
A typical day for me involves all sorts of flexible projects from lab work, to group projects and challenges, to short lectures and collaborating with passionate friends about future jobs and world-improving ideas. Getting involved in internships, field trips, research opportunities and unique classes has meant studying at science at UTS never has two days the same.
What advice you would give to students studying this degree?
Push yourself and get involved in as many extra opportunities and interest areas as you can. Advanced Science is a highly flexible and tailored degree if you are prepared to tell people what matters to you and chase it.
What would you like to do once you complete your degree?
After graduating, I would love to apply my skills and knowledge in science back to the coastal communities of NSW and Australia which inspired me to study science in the first place. Working in the field, researching, and applying sustainable and environmental practices to our communities is a great interest of mine in the future.
What other activities do you participate/do at uni?
At UTS I am involved in internships, volunteering trips for environmental causes, the Accomplish Award and BUILD program, as well as plenty of fun social events each semester.
