Mark Villar
I am fascinated by the drug discovery process and how new drugs are developed to treat diseases.
My name is Mark and I’m studying the Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry at UTS. I’m originally from the Philippines, but I came to Australia when I was just 11 years old with my family.
Before I decided to enrol in a science degree, I actually studied a Bachelor of Economics. My business degree really opened my eyes as to how the world works. I enjoyed exploring how society responds to significant problems and challenges such as global warming, poverty, economic development and financial recession.
Although I learnt a lot from my economics degree, my true passion was pursuing scientific research in chemistry and biology. I wanted to study medicinal chemistry at UTS because I’m fascinated by the drug discovery process and how new drugs are designed and developed to treat serious disease.
I’d have to say that the friends I’ve made are the best thing about studying at UTS. There are many great things about uni life that’s available on campus. There are many clubs and societies you can join so no matter what your interests are, you’re bound to find like-minded people to hang with outside of class. I’m a member of the UTS Music Society, Out2Party and the Queer Collective. I’ve also had several poems published in Vertigo.
One thing I could tell my year 12 self, it would be not to stress too much and to pursue other interests apart from studying. I’d also tell myself to tap a gap year, save some money and go travelling.
I’m coping quite well with my studies which are online at the moment because of the COVID-19 situation. My lecturers have been very accommodating and I’m trying to keep up to date with the revised materials as best as I can.
A tip I would offer students who are now studying online is to be sure to take a study break when you need it. Don’t be afraid to email your lecturers who are happy to answer any questions you may have.
