What led you to choose UTS:Law for your studies? I chose UTS due to its flexibility and practical framework - UTS offers evening classes which is great for students who work during the day like me. UTS:Law also encourages students to not only focus on their academic studies but to have a balance by getting involved in various extra curriculars. The Law Faculty is a supportive environment and I like the way the subjects are structured and delivered such as the seminar format. This small knitted learning environment provides students the opportunity to raise concerns and refine their ability to critically analyse arguments.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why? I had excellent lecturers and seminar leaders who are very passionate about their subject and are always willing to help me even outside of class hours. Law is a challenging degree both physically and emotionally so I appreciate the academic support and motivation they have provided me so far.
Where would you like your double degree to take your career? Business and Law complements each other very well - It open doors to various career prospects either that be working for the bank, government agencies, corporations, law firms and much more. I would love to secure employment as a graduate lawyer and hopefully after years of gaining deep industry insights, multi-disciplinary skills and experience, I can start-up my own firm that offer both legal and accounting services.
Are you involved in extra-curricular activities such as the Mentoring program, Brennan program, Mooting, LSS? How has this experience aided your career/personal development? I am currently a peer mentor for the Law Faculty. It is an enriching and fun experience being able to help first year students ease their transition from high school to university by providing study tips and other essential skills required in a law degree. The program provided me the opportunity to hone my leadership and inter-personal skills. The LSS Student Volunteer Committee is a fantastic way for students to engage outside the classroom. In my first year at UTS, I got the opportunity to shadow and help a barrister working on a pro bono criminal case. It was an eye opening experience to see law in practice and provided me the opportunity to network. As a part of the Brennan program, I got the chance to be a part of the Nicky McWilliam's Court referred Mediation Project in which I took on different roles such as researching, collating data and interviewing judges. It aided my career and learning development by providing me insight into mediation practices.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS? Make the most out of the opportunities offered. UTS provides various employment, networking and volunteering opportunities which help equip you with the tools necessary to become a successful law graduate. Also, do not be afraid to raise any problems regarding your learning materials during class. As my Torts tutor said, 'There is no such thing as a silly question. What is silly is not asking it in the first place'.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience at UTS:Law, or the University as a whole? UTS is a great university that has provided me knowledge and skills in the classroom, and a wide range of extracurricular activities that enables me to grow both personally and professionally. There is nothing greater than having access to food (Woolworth next to the library) to keep you going during the crazy exam periods!
