What led you to choose UTS:Law for your studies? I chose UTS:Law because I really loved the dynamism of the Law Faculty. Initiatives like the Brennan Justice and Leadership Program and fantastic mentoring opportunities were clear indicators that UTS:Law was on the forefront of legal education.
If you are working while you are studying, what does your job involve? I am working whilst studying, both as an English tutor at my old high school and as an administrative clerk for a medico-legal consultant.
How do you balance study and work commitments? Striking this balance takes time and practice. It takes a while to find a rhythm that works for you. Personally, I find that delegating days of the week for different purposes is what works for me. Irregardless of what form this balance takes, it must exist in order to be a successful student. Having a job, playing sport and socialising with friends keeps you sane! There is nothing healthy or productive about excessive study.
How have/will your studies at UTS contributed to your career? How have they informed the way you work? My studies at UTS have made me aware of the career options that lie before me. This will prove incredibly useful when it comes to choosing my legal path. I was also lucky enough to be chosen for the UTS Law High Achievers Mentoring Program, which has seen me paired with one of my legal heroes, The Hon. Michael Kirby. This has shaped my legal perspective and opened my eyes to several legal avenues which I can pursue upon the completion of my degree. The collegiality that exists within the UTS Law School has also helped inform the way I work, shifting the emphasis away from an individualist approach to learning. This has been hugely beneficial in enhancing my communication skills and the development of sincere friendships within the Law School.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why? I’d have to say, it would be the friendships that I have made within the law school, the respect I share for my teachers and ultimately, at the end of the day, the fact that I love what I am studying.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS? If you’re looking for a university that has great campus collegiality, a faculty that takes a genuine interest in your education and an experienced teaching staff then UTS is the place for you.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience at UTS:Law, or the University as a whole? I would say that it’s really important you get involved. Almost all of the opportunities that have presented themselves in my short time at UTS have been a product of my involvement. Get involved with the Brennan Program, go along to the UTS LSS social events and enter the law competitions. Not only will you form sincere relationships with your peers, but you will gain invaluable experience. UTS offers so much more than the degree itself, and there’s no point letting these fantastic opportunities go to rest. What’s more, you never know where they might take you!
