Why UTS Social and Political Sciences?
I have always been interested in the humanities, so this degree sounded like an ideal way of enriching my understanding of society and the process of change within it, along with the workings of the political sphere. I have always favoured learning that involves reading and writing, as well as the opportunity to explore the nuances and ambiguities within ideas and concepts. The reputation of the University of Technology Sydney as promoting practical learning over textbook learning also appealed to me as I enjoy trying to apply what I have learnt within real world situations and scenarios.
I was also interested in being able to engage more effectively in current affairs as well as interested in social change.
What I have gained from your studies
My first-year studies have allowed me to gain a more thorough and complex understanding of societal issues, for example the impact of gender and race on experiences within society. I have come to appreciate and discern the underpinning beliefs behind political ideologies and the motivations of people and groups within the political sphere.
Along with my Social and Political Science studies, I am also undertaking a Bachelor of Laws in the hopes of attaining a greater understanding of the structures within society and how social or political change may come about. The way I see it, my Law degree provides the logistical and practical knowledge which will be helpful in comprehending the processes by which social values are institutionally embedded, and how laws may impact upon different people within a jurisdiction. On the other hand, my Social and Political Science degree allows me to perceive the underlying factors which may lead to inequality, conflict, law-breaking, and a myriad of other social issues. These degrees complement well as the knowledge learnt can be applied in similar spheres, and I will hopefully be able to combine this information to discover or find solutions to produce social change.
I think my Communications degree complements this well, as I am able to think critically about the way society works whilst attempting to discover or find solutions to certain problems.
I am interested in achieving positive change to try to improve society, and thus chose a law degree to look at this in a logistical way (although of course government and politics is only one way of achieving change). However, I felt that this on its own would not be sufficient to ensure my understanding of the issues behind reforms to law. I think the Bachelor of Communication (Social and Political Sciences) degree goes very well with my law degree as I am able to think critically about the way society works while looking for solutions.
The Bachelor of Communication (Social and Political Sciences) degree has expanded my world view by exposing me to views and ideas which I may have otherwise been unaware of. Being able to perceive issues beyond the bubble of my own experiences has been extremely valuable in understanding others and society as a whole. It was not only the content material which contributed to this, but also the chance to discuss and listen to the thoughts and opinions of other students.
My future career after University
I would ideally like to pursue a career in advocacy work or social/law reform- essentially something which would enable me to contribute to a positive change for society.
