At UTS, there is so much support around you – from student services to peer mentoring programs...
Which degree are you studying? 1st year, Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration
What led you to choose UTS:Law for your postgraduate studies? The first reason I chose UTS was the offering of this double degree, which I felt would provide me with many opportunities for my post-university life. The second reason was that friends who had studied at UTS had informed me that classes were smaller, courses use a variety of learning methods and lecturers really focus on explaining concepts. The final reason was due to the University’s information nights, where I had the opportunity to speak with lecturers about courses and be impressed by the student support offered by UTS. These information nights also showed me the variety of different spaces within UTS designed to facilitate both individual and group study.
How do you balance study and work commitments? I only work part-time during my studies, so my degree has only ever been minimally affected by work. In fact, I often welcome work as a break!
How will your studies at UTS contribute to your career? How have they informed the way you work? By studying a JD/MBA, my career options are quite broad. Each subject I have completed so far has taught me different ways of analysing the world, and different methods of finding conclusions. The methods of learning and reasoning required by business and law are very different, but also compliment each other. My studies have therefore equipped me with a variety of different tools for my career.
What sets UTS students and graduates apart in your field? The analytical tools taught and different methods of teaching make UTS students more able to adapt and change depending on the challenges they face.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? While it has been quite challenging, the most rewarding aspect is the feeling you receive from finishing a subject or assessment.
What is the most useful or important thing you’ve learned from your studies at UTS so far? The variety of different thinking methods have shown me a variety of ways to analyse situations, which I believe will be important when I enter the workplace.
Has anyone in particular at the University had a significant influence on your studies? Some of the teachers have been particularly helpful and supportive of my learning. These teachers have encouraged me to try harder, and develop my thinking and reasoning.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS? Studying law is very different to any other area, so you have to start with an open mind. At UTS, there is so much support around you – from student services to peer mentoring programs, which all help you do your best. The teachers have practical experience and understand challenges which people face, and are very supportive of their students. The University also has lots of different study spaces, making it a great place to go. If you are thinking about it, I would recommend going to an information evening, where you will meet lecturers and be able to get a feel for the University.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience at UTS:Law, or the University as a whole? UTS has been great, the support provided to students has been incredibly helpful, and you get the feeling everyone wants you to succeed, which is what you want from a university.
