What led you to choose UTS:Law for your studies? UTS:Law has a reputation for not only being a good law school, but also progressive and one that caters for working students.
If you are working while you are studying, what does your job involve? I am the Research and Policy Manager at a national not for profit organisation. My job includes maintaining an oversight of the policy and regulatory environment relevant to my organisation, developing policy positions and composing submissions. I also drive research projects that inform our strategic direction and provide us with data.
How do you balance study and work commitments? It’s a cliche, but time management is crucial and I try to make the most efficient use of the study time that I do. However you also have to be mindful of your personal limitations - as my job is quite demanding, I only do one subject at a time. I also have a flexible employer, who understands when I need to take time off work to attend exams.
How have/will your studies at UTS contributed to your career? How have they informed the way you work? A degree in law has provided a greater understanding of the legal and regulatory environment in which my organisation operates. It has also given me good research and critical analysis skills which is fundamental to my job.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why? Knowing that I can use my knowledge and the skills gained for the benefit of the environment in my current job and future career.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS? Law is so much more than just a degree. See how else you can get involved and broaden your horizons. Take an elective in an area you don’t know much about, meet people. The Brennan Program at UTS is a great way to keep learning and also facilitates you using your skills to benefit others.
Full time work with study is a challenge. However the best advice I could give someone is to find a supportive group of friends that you can learn from and be encouraged by.
