Putting public health into practice
Studying public health at UTS opens you up to a world of opportunity. Hear about some of our students' experiences!
As a UTS Public Health student, you'll get to complete an invaluable professional placement in third year – some of our past students have been fortunate enough to complete theirs with large international organisations and ground-breaking research centres.
Intern with WHO
Public Health students often have the opportunity to work with the UTS World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHO CC UTS). WHO CC UTS form part of an international collaborative network that supports and undertakes projects in support of WHO’s program at national, regional and international levels.
An internship with the centre generally involves supporting a variety of big ticket issues, producing reports and researching as a valued part of the team.
Some past projects public health students have been privy to include: a research report on the vital role of nursing; attending the 'State of the World’s Nursing' meeting; and researching issues in Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Western Pacific.
“Reading through interviews from health professionals across the Western Pacific Region was fascinating. Not only was I learning how to analyse research, but I was gaining an even broader understanding into the different cultural aspects that influence the different levels and types of care around the region...
...My time at the centre will not be forgotten, and I walk away feeling as though the work I did may one day make a positive impact in the way the health systems train and educate their nurses.”

Learn to lead with the UN
Public Health students have also occasionally had the opportunity to work with other large organisations as part of their degree – even the United Nations.
2019 graduate William was invited to visit the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok for a three-day intensive training program in diplomacy, leadership and policy development.
“As a health student, I felt that this forum was a great opportunity to learn about the diplomatic collaboration of different international stakeholders and countries in the processes of policy negotiation, implementation and representation.”

Make a difference with research
Passionate public health advocate Zofia was selected to participate in the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health research scholarship program.
Through this experience Zofia was able to investigate data surrounding cancer screening and improving the efficiency of cancer screening programmes.
“I was trained in research analysis software and met some amazing people who are leading the public health field. The most rewarding part of this experience was how much I grew personally and professionally.”
