I wanted to educate myself about the industry for my own benefit and for that of my children.
I am a doctor of medicine, and am currently working as a surgical assistant in Bowral. I have two children, one studying at university and the other studying his HSC. Without a doubt, my family is my passion.
In fact, I became interested in studying Sport and Exercise Management because of my children. I am heavily involved in sport, not just as a participant, but also as a parent and as a volunteer. My children play sport at an elite level and so, I wanted to educate myself about the industry for my own benefit and for that of my children.
I chose to study at UTS because the structure of the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management was appealing to me. It combines business and science (which I love). The university is also most convenient to me (as convenient as anywhere is from Bowral!).
It has been 25 years since my last degree! So, for me, the most rewarding aspect of the course is being able to use my brain in a different way. I have really been enjoying the challenge.
Comparing my past studies to my current studies, I feel like I approach my education differently now. As a non-recent school leaver, I’ve found that my attitude has changed – I am definitely here for the knowledge and skills, as well as my own improvement, rather than to just pass.
My goal for the future is to ensure that I can put the knowledge that I have gained to good use. Whether I work in the industry or not, I know that everything I’ve learned can still help me.
For future students, I recommend that you do the work. It is much easier to keep on top of things than trying to catch up. Likewise, don’t be afraid of the lecturers or tutors. The staff are here to help you succeed and they want you to succeed. Use them and ask for help when you need it – they’re very approachable!
