Maisie Wills
This degree has provided me with an increased awareness of global health.
Meet Maisie Wills, UTS Bachelor of Public Health Graduate
I moved to Australia from England, when I was 6 years old, with my mother and my stepfather. I visit England every year to see my father and other relatives. I attended Mosman Public School and Mosman High School before coming to UTS. I am the first person in my family to ever go to university! I originally started a Journalism course at UTS in 2020, however, after the first semester I realised it wasn’t for me, and so I deferred. I then started Bachelor of Public Health in 2021 and I loved it!
What are you passionate about?
I am super passionate about all things fitness, nutrition, and healthy eating. I love going to the gym and trying different workouts, as it makes me feel good and boosts my endorphins. I also love experimenting with all sorts of healthy recipes, as well as trying lots of different types of food. I have a huge sweet-tooth!
What inspired you to study this degree?
I originally chose this degree because I wanted to be a nutritionist, and while I was super interested in a healthy lifestyle and all the factors involved, as time progressed, I developed a strong interest in health promotion.
Why did you choose to study at UTS?
I heard great things about UTS. I love the architecture and how modern it all is. I was also very drawn to the location, as all I had to do was a short bus and train trip and it was there.
What is one highlight or experience that has stood out during your studies?
I think a highlight for me would be undergoing a professional placement at TLC Centre (a holistic health service providing Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Exercise Physiology services). I feel like it was valuable for me to be exposed to a professional work setting and gain experience for the future. Undertaking this placement was also very rewarding as I was able to work with children with disabilities and help with daily activities.
Has studying this degree changed you in any way? If so, how?
Undertaking this degree has provided me with an increased awareness of global health, positively impacted my personal health and helped me gain specialised knowledge of the public health sector.
What are your plans for the future?
I am making the most of having no commitments and enjoying the sunshine while working casually. The next step after this break, will be applying to jobs and graduate programs. I would love a position as a health promotion officer or to potentially work in the family health distribution business in the UK.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about your degree or career path?
I thoroughly enjoyed my degree. I would advise students to consider their future career options and be aware of the options within the degree that will best support them in achieving that outcome.
