During my studies, I became more aware of the diversities and inequalities that were around us.
In 2012, I graduated from Stella Maris College, in Manly on the Northern Beaches. I then went into full-time dance training for two years, training in ballet and contemporary. Afterwards, I began teaching and instructing Pilates – it was during this time that I began expanding my knowledge for health and fitness. Health, fitness and equality are some of the major passions in my life.
I chose to study the Bachelor of Health Science (now Bachelor of Public Health), because I wanted a greater understanding of how health impacts society. Health is intertwined throughout everything in society; for instance, if you don’t have a healthy society, you have no one to work and if your society can’t work, then you have no economy.
I decided to study at UTS because I had heard that the content taught in the courses is very current to the professions that are available to graduates. I also wanted the ability to work and study, and I found that UTS provided the best balance for this.
The most rewarding aspect of the course was receiving an internship to the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Nursing, Midwifery and Child Development at UTS. This internship allowed me to put the skill sets that I gained throughout my degree into practice, with support from the staff.
During my studies, I became more aware of the diversities and inequalities that were around us, not just across the globe but also in Australia. Throughout the degree, I became more confident to go out and make a difference within my career.
Studying the Bachelor of Health Science gave me a great understanding and overview of the health industry including health care systems and health research. I am now a ministerial coordinator for NSW Health and the skills I learned in my degree has given me a strong advantage from the start, rather than struggling to catch up and learn about the industry.
If you’re interested about culture and health, then I recommend completing a Bachelor of Health Science (now Bachelor of Public Health). It will provide you with the knowledge and skills you didn’t know existed in health. I also highly recommend this degree if you want to work in a government organisation.
