Tehsin Mansuri
Since studying a nursing degree, I've begun to see life from a new perspective.
I was born in India and lived in Dubai before moving to Australia to study. I’ve always strived to be a curious, hard-working student who is dedicated to achieving my goal of working in healthcare.
I decided to study here because UTS is #1 for nursing and midwifery in Australia*. This course appealed to me because it offered a large number of clinical placement hours which meant I would gain experience in a variety of different clinical settings.
I’ve always dreamt of working in a hospital and originally wanted to become a doctor. When I came to UTS, I was enrolled in a bio-medical science degree but later found my heart wasn’t in it. I wanted to make a real difference to patients and gain clinical experience right from the beginning – I later discovered nursing and decided to transfer.
Studying at UTS means you get hands-on experience right from your first class. By the end of my first semester, I had developed a good understanding of the nursing specialties available and what life as a registered nurse is really like.
I’m proud of the person I’ve become since completing my degree. As a nurse, you are given the ability to help patients in many different ways. Whether you are aiding their recovery or empowering patients and their families - being a nurse is extremely rewarding. You learn to become a humble, tolerant and responsible person and begin to see life from a different perspective.
I’m passionate about studying overseas and hope to inspire international students living in Australia as a City of Sydney International Student Leadership Ambassador [opens external site]. While I’m not studying, I’m working with the City of Sydney Council International Students Consultation Group. I take great pride in supporting international students adjust to living and studying in a new city. Typical tasks include participating in international student forums, seminars, media interviews, research projects.
In the future, I would like to create an online platform to help empower future nurses. Nursing students will be able to access photos, videos and other study materials on the platform to help them become real-life heroes out in the field.
My advice to those who aspire to become a nurse is to act now and turn your dream into reality. Nursing is one of the most amazing careers out there that can take you anywhere. There are so many options that will suit your lifestyle in nursing. It might seem like a long road ahead, but in the end, it's worth it. I can’t recommend it enough!
