Classes are like stepping into the hospital wards, you learn to be confident in a clinical setting.
Before starting at UTS I worked in the Australian Navy as part of a first-response team for all kinds of emergencies. I decided to come back to university to get qualified as a nurse and open up some new opportunities. Since childhood, I’ve always wanted to do something in medicine or in hospitals. I was in hospital nearly every month until I was seven, so I got really comfortable in that environment and I decided that I wanted to do something where I could help other people, just as I’d been helped by nursing and medical staff for so many years.
I chose UTS because from what I’d heard and read, UTS graduates were amongst the most employable health graduates. I also heard the facilities were great and the location is ideal, so UTS was the best fit for me.
The most rewarding aspect of the degree is doing all of our classes in our state-of-the-art labs. From your first lesson, it’s like stepping into a hospital ward. You get really comfortable in the clinical environment. When you go out on placement and you’re in the workplace, it doesn’t feel foreign at all. That’s definitely my favourite part of the degree.
In the future I’d like to work in critical care and/or emergency nursing. I may go on to join NSW Air Ambulance and work as a flight nurse. The idea is to combine nursing with something exhilarating.
My advice to prospective students: I would definitely advise anyone considering doing a nursing degree to come here and have a look at the labs and look at the facilities we have here, because once you see them, you’ll have your mind made up straight away. Nursing is a great degree, and we need people who are great communicators and who are super intelligent, so I’d encourage anyone looking for a rewarding career to consider it.
