Embarking on this degree has enabled me to continue my medical journey here in Australia.
Before UTS, I have experienced quite a life journey so far; I come from a large extended family, I have served a life-changing military career of 12 years, and I’ve studied cardiac medicine in the U.S. as well as here in Australia. My proudest achievements in life, though, are my son and daughter.
Coming from an international medical background, embarking on this degree has enabled me to continue my medical journey here in Australia. What I’m most passionate about is helping people and making children smile – so nursing was the right choice.
I’ve found the most rewarding aspect has been getting to connect with patients of many diverse backgrounds, customs and traditions while on clinical placements each session. And, as a mature-age student, returning to university-level studies has also shown me that goals can be achieved regardless of age. Having life experience behind me is a definite asset to have in nursing.
Next year I will be graduating as a Registered Nurse and I am looking forward to helping young children live their best possible lives.
There are many nuggets of advice I could share with future students:
- Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.
- Network among your fellow peers – you will make friends for life in this degree.
- Seek guidance from your tutors, and make it a habit early in your subjects.
- Do not wait until the last day to write a paper! The scope of knowledge you learn in nursing is great so try to get the most out of it.
