What motivated you to undertake a research program?
I liked the idea of the doctorate because it is aimed at research within a clinical setting and recognises clinical leadership. Study is also my way of providing me with a challenge to extend my capabilities and goals, making me think and keep up with current nursing practice. Despite the challenge of studying at the same time as working, I am able to consider other research and new ideas and consider their application in the clinical setting.
Why did you choose UTS?
I chose UTS because of the range and quality of the degrees available, the academics who provide excellent support and the structure of a very well organised faculty.
What did you personally gain from your studies?
The challenge I was seeking. Studying has also taught me how to broaden my outlook, more critically appraise situations and documents and question my own thoughts and values.
What was your research topic and what did you discover?
My research topic is about continence management in residential aged care. However, my research site is not just a nursing home it is located in a multi-purpose service in a rural area. As such the nurses aren’t just focussed on caring for the residents but also for acute, outpatient, emergency and community patients or clients.
What do you intend to do after you complete your degree?
Continue to work in health services.
