UTS provides very practical learning for students, working on real industry and social problems.
What led you to choose UTS for your studies in Business?
I had a friend from high school who had already started at UTS and highly recommended it. After going along to Open Day, I learned more about the different options and opportunities that UTS could offer. I particularly liked the range of majors and sub-majors that were available and that UTS Business School was accredited by AACSB.
How have your studies at UTS helped you in finding a career path?
My studies have largely helped in developing my interests and skills. By taking introductory subjects across different faculties I learned what I enjoyed, what I didn’t enjoy so much, and best of all, how each of the different sectors work together. The UTS Careers office has also proved to be helpful by organising many events which allow students to interact with different employers across a number of industries. UTS BUiLD has encouraged me to develop leadership skills in a number of challenging environments. It has definitely played a role in developing my interest in leadership, innovation and social entrepreneurship.
What sets UTS students apart in your field?
UTS provides very practical learning for students, working on real industry and social problems. UTS is consistently recognised as a provider of quality education and has one of the largest international exchange programs in Australia. This provides students with a greater understanding of the global economy and international business environment. In July 2014 I travelled to a rural village in Bangalore, India with 60 other students. Together with 7 other students, I further developed a jewellery making business, known as Roka. By employing local women, we were able to provide them with a supplementary income, allowing them to better educate their children through our after-school education centres. I will be returning as a Team Leader in January 2016, completing the extremely competitive leadership program as part of the Business Internship subject in the Bachelor of Business.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why?
The most rewarding part of my degree is simply being involved in university life at UTS. From networking with students and employers through student societies, to being a student mentor, to taking part in UFit group fitness classes and taking part in overseas programs, and developing leadership and employability skills, there are so many opportunities on offer.
What sort of work do you hope to be doing after you graduate?
I hope to pursue a leadership role with a focus on innovation, change management or social business. I would also like to improve relations between countries in the Asia Pacific. I am interested in pursuing further studies with a Master of Management or Master of Not-for-Profit and Social Enterprise Management at UTS.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Business at UTS?
Do it and don’t look back! Take every opportunity to immerse and challenge yourself! Whether it be getting to know your tutors and lecturers, entering an industry competition, playing a sport, joining a few student societies, being a student mentor or doing a BUiLD overseas program. If you can, definitely do a semester abroad! You will meet so many new friends from all over the world and it will give you a new perspective on business and life. UTS has so much to offer if you are open to opportunities.
