What degree/s have you earned?
I completed my undergraduate studies at Macquarie University (2010-2013), graduating with a degree in economics and finance. I then spent 2014 doing my honours in economics at UTS.
Why did you choose to do honours at UTS?
I contacted the honours coordinator for the economics discipline group at UTS, in order to find out more about the course and the university in general. She was extremely helpful and walked me through the degree and what was required from students. Since I was more interested in the theory side of economics I also contacted Research Professor John Wooders to get further information about the course. He was very enthusiastic and helpful, spending quite some time talking to me about UTS, the honours year and economics in general. It was very encouraging that he was willing to spend so much time getting to know me and my plans for the future. Ultimately, the atmosphere of the economics department convinced me that I should choose UTS for my honours year.
What was a highlight for you this year?
The most valuable experience was definitely getting to know the staff at UTS, and learning from them. For example, it was very easy to just walk into a professor’s office and talk to them about economics, or problems you were encountering in the coursework or your thesis. Writing a thesis was also quite an experience. I usually met with my supervisor once a fortnight and we'd talk over problems I was having with my thesis. These meetings proved to be the most valuable experience of my honours year. I was forced to think deeper about the issues I was facing, and in doing so I became a much better economist.
How have your studies at UTS helped you in finding / preparing for a career path?
Studying at UTS greatly deepened my interest and understanding of economics. Further, the rigour of the degree has prepared me well for work in both industry and academia.
