What degree/s have you earned?
Bachelor of Business with Honours in Finance and a second major in Accounting.
How have your studies at UTS helped you in finding a career path?
First and foremost, being able to leverage UTS’ reputation in the industry has already been a big advantage when it comes to securing jobs and internships, which allowed me to get real work experience while studying and an inside view of different areas within the industry. This has definitely been a big help in narrowing down the area I want to pursue a career in. Furthermore, one of the big benefits of the Bachelor is that it introduces you to a diverse range of topics relating to your major(s). Getting this exposure further provides the opportunity to narrow down what specifically you are interested in and passionate about when it comes to your chosen major.
How has your learning experience at UTS prepared you for your career?
My experience studying at UTS has equipped me with a broad set of skills that are transferable to the workplace and it has definitely helped prepare me for my career ahead. The coursework honed my ability to think critically, problem solve and structure and communicate my arguments. The presentations and opportunity to teach during my Honours year allowed me to become more comfortable presenting and communicating knowledge in front of an audience, and the countless group assignments meant I got experience working and collaborating in a variety of teams comprised of different skill sets and work styles to achieve a common goal. Furthermore, undertaking a Business degree was a significant personal challenge and I definitely matured during my time at UTS – enhancing my ability to manage my time and plan my workload in order to meet all my deadlines.
What was the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why?
Without a doubt the relationships I formed both with my fellow students and the members of the faculty. Having friends in the same industry as you is a big plus, as you look out for each other and you do really want to help each other have successful careers. Furthermore, having relationships with the academics at the University is great as they have a wealth of knowledge and in my experience are usually very generous with their time.
What are you doing now? Work, further study?
I spent the summer travelling around North America with a few friends and since I have been back I have been applying for Graduate roles with a view towards starting in early 2017. I have also been working part time as a Research Assistant at SIRCA – coincidentally the same company that provided the data for the Australian portion of my Honours research.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Business at UTS?
I would definitely recommend studying Business at UTS. However, while studying, I would encourage getting practical experience in the form of cadetships, internships and/or work experience. Furthermore, as with everything in life, what you put in is what you get out, so I would recommend that you put yourself out there – such as by being proactive in class when it comes to introducing yourself to others, being active in the different societies and attending as many social events as possible.
