There are heaps of resources here which makes studying much easier
Eric studied in El Salvador and the US before commencing his MBA at UTS. He has 6 years of IT management experience but has found that he gained valuable management skills through his MBA program, supplemented with part-time work.
"My background is in telecommunications and I worked in the field for several years and had a lot of management responsibilities. When I was researching courses I was looking for something that would blend my technology experience with my management experience.
I was surprised to see how much I had to learn about management – I was completely oblivious to anything related to management. Core subjects of the MBA allowed me to take modules in accounting, finance and economics – all subjects that were completely new to me and very challenging, but I enjoyed that challenge.
I think having a more structured way of approaching people management will help me to find a job in El Salvador. As an IT person and an engineer having to face people is one of the things that I dread! But it feels like the whole management course has been about how to deal with people, which has been really interesting and I look forward to applying all of that knowledge.
I think the teachers at UTS are very comfortable in themselves. They know their subjects very well and they are able to have fun when they teach. As a student you can see how a teacher projects that joy when they’re lecturing on a topic that they love.
There are heaps of resources here which makes studying much easier. You have massive libraries and computer labs. The professors have a good mix of experience. Some work in their fields, others teach and research but you feel confident that they are all very knowledgeable. Either way you are with people that are very well prepared to teach their subjects.
I was working for a public university before the MBA, and I am hoping to get a government job when I go back – definitely hoping to stay close to telecommunications and IT because that’s what I have experience in. And also I want to get a management position so that I can use the skills that I’ve gained at UTS."
