Overview
A travel grant awarded to a UTS Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor student, to undertake an internship in which they will see legal services applied in practice to assist clients, the community and the administration of justice.
The Prize will be awarded to a Law student who is interested in the practice of law and justice, but who may not have had the opportunity to see the law in practice in this way before.
Where possible, the internship will be undertaken overseas, at a location that assists the Recipient with broadening their experience and network. The internship location for the 2025 recipient will be Gleiss Lutz in Germany.
The placement attached to this prize can be recognised as an international internship towards the following subjects: International Legal Internship (76098) (UG) and; Global Professional Experience Project (78295) (JD). Students undertaking overseas travel for course-related purposes may be eligible for further funds from UTS Global Short Programs and OS-HELP loans.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the Prize, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- Australian or New Zealand citizens, or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
- Enrolled full-time in a UTS Bachelor of Laws (single or combined degree) or UTS Juris Doctor; and
- In the final or penultimate year of their chosen UTS Law degree program; and
- All candidates must be available to participate in an interview.
Applicants intending to evidence the preferential criteria should apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for an UAC Equity Scholarship.
Selection process
As demonstrated in the Prize application and interview.
- Personal attributes that contribute to the Recipient’s motivation and ability to succeed in their chosen UTS Faculty of Law course,
- Demonstrated initiative in personal and professional life,
- Potential for the internship experience to further the Recipient’s law career.
- Academic Performance (WAM in current UTS course) may be taken into consideration.
- In addition, preference may be given to applicants who have experienced any long-term educational barriers and/or personal hardship as demonstrated via the UAC Equity Scholarship application. including the following:
- Financial hardship/low socio-economic status
- Regional or remote background
- Sole parent responsibilities
- Carer responsibilities
- Refugee Status
- Indigenous Australian
- Disability/Long-term medical condition or ongoing effects of abuse
