The John Heine Memorial Scholarship in Engineering has been established as an equity scholarship to support a student who has demonstrated a passion for engineering and can evidence financial hardship and/or any other educational disadvantage/s.
The Scholarship is established in memory of John Heine who did much to advance the cause of the metal trades industry and is supported by the Ernest Heine Family Foundation.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be an Australian citizen; and
- Be commencing their first year of an undergraduate Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice course or combined Engineering (Honours) degree courses at UTS; and
- Be majoring or intending to major in either Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering, or Chemical Process Engineering; and
- Be either a current or non-current school leaver with an ATAR (or equivalent) of 80 (including bonus points) or above. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants will be considered with an ATAR (or equivalent of 69 or above) or have received an offer through the Jumbunna Direct Entry Program; and
- Must complete the UAC Equity Scholarship application through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) therein demonstrating financial disadvantages and/or other education barrier/s that may include but not limited:
- Sole parent responsibilities
- Carer responsibilities
- Long-term medical condition / disability or ongoing effect of abuse
- English language difficulty (from non-English speaking backgrounds)
- Indigenous Australian
- Regional or remote background
- Refugee
- Must apply for this Scholarship using the UTS online Scholarships Application form; and
- Must be available to attend an interview in person (face-to-face or online).
Selection process
- Evidence of financial need and/or other educational barriers as assessed by the UAC Equity Scholarship.
- Academic merit in the academic qualification used as the basis of admission.
- As demonstrated in the scholarship application and interview:
- Motivation and commitment to succeed in their chosen Engineering course
- Initiative in extra-curricular and non-academic activities
- Provision of a written reference on official school/organisation letterhead from an independent (non-family/friend) person who can provide informed comment about the applicant’s achievements and how they meet the selection criteria.
