Overview

The aim of the Doug & Silvia Memorial Prize is to encourage undergraduate journalism students to continue their journalism training by undertaking a voluntary work placement with a well known news outlet. The Prize is focused on providing this opportunity to students that don’t necessarily have the social capital to obtain a placement on their own.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Prize, a candidate must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
  • Be enrolled in one of the following courses:
    • Bachelor of Communication (Journalism); or
    • Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) Bachelor of Arts in International Studies; or
    • Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation
    • Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) Bachelor of Laws
  • Have successfully completed 96 credit points; and
  • Submit a piece of journalistic work of completed during the degree and has been published on Central News which is:
    • no fewer than four-hundred (400) words; or
    • video work of no less than four (4) minutes; or
    • audio work or no less than four (4) minutes; and
  • A statement of no more than 400 words articulating how being awarded the Prize will support their passion for a career in journalism.

Selection process

  • Journalistic merit of their submitted piece
  • Articulated passion for a career in journalism as demonstrated in their submitted statement of no more than 400 words
  • Academic merit in the Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) to date.

Other information

The voluntary placement will be with a reputable news outlet (e.g. The Guardian, Australia; New York Times; Crikey) and will commence at the completion of Spring session. The parameters are to be agreed between the recipient and the designated news outlet.
