South Pacific Chief Nursing & Midwifery Officer Alliance SPCNMOA

The South Pacific Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers Alliance (SPCNMOA), represents the nursing and midwifery leaders working in Governments across the South Pacific in 14 Pacific Island Nations and includes Papua New Guinea.

The purpose of the SPCNMOA is to enhance nursing and midwifery effectiveness in promoting and improving the population health in member jurisdictions. SPCNMOA intends to achieve its purpose by raising the quality and relevance of nursing, midwifery and health leadership in health services and nursing and midwifery education. This is facilitated through forming alliances with, and collaborating closely with member jurisdictions, academic, regulatory and service partners in activities such as information sharing, capacity building, research, and education and service projects. These activities are aimed at addressing national and sub-regional human resource and health service priorities. This purpose is integrally linked to those of the World Health Organization and other international, regional and national health agencies and ministries.

SPCNMOA Educational Task Force

An education taskforce comprising of of Chief Nursing Officers and educational representatives from the South Pacific Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Alliance (SPCNMOA) has been established. The purpose of this taskforce is to support the implementation of activities detailed in Resolution 1 from the SPCNMOA 2008 resolutions.

The SPCNMOA and its Educational Task Force is exploring issues in line with phase 2 of the program to enhance and standardize regional training programs in nursing and midwifery in the Pacific. The initial proposal was developed following the 2006 SPCNMOA meeting held in Samoa, and came out of an initiative (7.2) under the Sustainable Development in the Pacific Plan. James Cook University received the contract to complete phase 1 of this work. The recommendations from their report focused on legislation, workforce planning/employment and education, consequently several regional projects have commenced.

Phase 2 of this program was endorsed by Resolution 1 at the SPCNMOA meeting in Sydney 2008. Resolution 1 (2008) recommended a task-force be created by the SPCNMOA, its' steering committee, secretariat and WHO to support the implementation of activities to support this resolution. The Educational Taskforce (ETF) would be established as a subcommittee of the SPCNMOA and is a working group of the SPCNMOA. Therefore, all recommendations of the ETF must be endorsed by the SPCNMOA before being shared with regional partners.
