Malaysian Ministry of Health study tour

The Malaysian Ministry of Health funded Nurse Educators to undertake a three week study tour at UTS.

The purpose of the program was to expose the six Malaysian Educators to Australian medical, clinical and university educational experiences and to meet specific learning objectives. Also, they wanted to be able to observe targeted knowledge and skills that could be transferred to local practice. The program, run through the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Development at UTS included clinical placements at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and a variety of learning experiences from the teaching staff at UTS.

Feedback from the Educators after the program was complete in October 2009 indicated that they were highly satisfied with the way their learning objectives were met. They found the high-fidelty simulation labs and SimMan, and the online learning experiences provided especially innovative.

Objectives

The learning objectives for the program included:

  • Observe contemporary teaching methodologies including those in the simulated experiential learning
  • Organisation and components of Australian healthcare and hospital systems
  • Patient care concepts in medical and surgical nursing
  • Experience the latest technology used in medical and surgical environments
  • Build an understanding of the multicultural influences related to nursing and healthcare
  • Gain latest knowledge in nursing intervention perioperative care

The educators now are prepared to introduce some of the practices they observed and experienced at UTS back in Malaysia.
