Banda Aceh improving clinical teaching and learning in pre-service programs
Associate Professor Lin Lock completed a consultancy in Aceh focusing on reconstruction/rehabilitation work following the 2004 tsunami. Work was funded through the Asian Development Bank and AusAID. Major components of the consultancy included:
- Instituting the Nurses and Midwives Development Team of Nangroe Aceh Darruslam as the major decision making body for development work,
- Developing and instituting an orientation program for nurses coming to the Zainol Abidin Umum Ruma Sakit, the major referral hospital for the province and which suffered extensive damage and loss of life in the tsunami,
- Developing and instituting an emergency program for new nurses staffing the new Emergency Department of the referral hospital,
- Scoping and instituting a three month clinical development program for 11 nurses and midwives taken at Khon Kaen General Hospital, Thailand,
- Instituting an intensive English language program in Medan taken by nurses and midwives preparing for either an overseas clinical development programs or master level study,
- Preparing for ten nurses or midwives to commence master level study at the University of Indonesia,
- Running a weekend professionalism and ethics workshop for nurses and midwives,
- Commencing and completing a Delphi project identifying 12 examinable essential nursing skills in preparation for external nurses registration examination following introduction of national nurses register.
