On Thursday, 10 February 2022, the Centre for Media Transition published its latest report: Ethics in Conflict: Talking to Australian journalists covering conflict about ethical decision-making. It explores the ethical quandaries faced by reporters in conflict zones, and the potential limitations of a code-based approach to ethical decision-making. The research was led by CMT Co-Director Professor Monica Attard, Dr Chrisanthi Giotis and Dr Sacha Molitorisz.
For the report, six former and current correspondents and photojournalists with experience reporting on conflict were interviewed: Sophie McNeill, Stan Grant, Richard Murray, Ginny Stein, Gary Ramage and Kate Geraghty. The symposium also included panellists ABC deputy foreign editor Matt Brown, Saturday Paper foreign editor Hamish McDonald, UTS law lecturer Dr Kathryn Greenman and the ICRC’s Australian head of mission David Tuck. This research project involved a partnership between the Centre for Media Transition (CMT) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The report and the launch of a dedicated website followed on from a half-day symposium, Conflicting Ethics in Conflict Reporting, held online on Friday, 17 September 2021.
